Vyapam scam: Supreme Court orders CBI to probe all cases

The Apex Court's order transferring all Vyapam-related cases to the CBI came after the state government gave its consent to shifting investigation from the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and the Special Task Force (STF).

It issued notice and sought response of Centre and the state government on a plea for removal of Madhya Pradesh Governor Ram Naresh Yadav for his alleged involvement in the scam. The court also issued notice to the Governor.

A bench headed by Chief Justice H L Dattu clarified that all cases will be transferred to the CBI from Monday and the agency will file its report before it on July 24.

Before handing over the probe to the CBI, the Apex Court took on record the submission of Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi, who on behalf of the MP government, said that the state has no objection on transferring the investigation of cases relating to Vyapam scam to CBI and the cases related to the deaths of people allegedly related to the scam for free and fair probe.

"The Attorney General (AG) on instruction states that MP govt has no objection whatsoever for transferring the investigation of criminal cases relating to Vyapam scam to the CBI and the cases related to deaths of those allegedly connected with the scam for free and fair probe,” the bench said.

"We appreciate the stand of the AG. In view of the above we transfer investigation of all criminal cases relating to Vyapam scam and death of people allegedly related to it, to CBI," the bench also comprising Justices Arun Mishra and Amitava Roy directed.

Vyapam scam: Police's U-turn on Namrata case; no review ordered

No review is ordered in the case as investigation is complete and the report has been submitted. No question of any review arises," Ujjain range Inspector General of Police (IGP) V Madhu Kumar told reporters here.

"If a court or any other agency says then only a case can be reopened. Police had submitted its report only after doing complete investigation and it has no doubts over it," Kumar said.

However, earlier in the day, Ujjain District Superintendent of Police Manohar Singh Varma had said, "We have ordered a review of the death of Namrata Damor. Sub- Divisional Officer of Police, Tarana, RK Sharma will reopen the case."

Namrata's case came back into focus following the sudden death of TV journalist Akshay Singh in Jhabua district's Meghnagar town recently after he had interviewed Namrata's father.

Namrata's body was found near the railway tracks on January 7, 2012 in the district. Police first registered a murder case, but later termed it an accident and closed it.

Vyapam scam: Police to reopen MBBS student death case

Namrata's case has come back in focus after the sudden death of TV journalist Akshay Singh in Jhabua district's Meghnagar town recently after he interviewed Namrata's father.

Ujjain District's Superintendent of Police Manohar Singh Varma today said, "We have ordered a review of the death of Namrata Damor. Sub Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP), Tarana, RK Sharma will reopen the case."

Namrata's body was found under mysterious conditions near the railway tracks on January 7, 2012. Earlier, the police had registered a 'murder' case in this regard and later termed the incident as an 'accident' and closed the case, a police official said.

Namrata was studying at the Government MGM Medical College in Indore and it was suspected that she took admission with the help of the racket involved in the high-profile Vyapam scam that is said to have claimed 45 lives.

Buckling under pressure, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had yesterday made a U-turn and decided to seek an investigation into the murky Vyapam scam by CBI on a day the Supreme Court agreed to hear petitions in this regard.

Following Chouhan's announcement at a press conference, the state government moved the Madhya Pradesh High Court seeking its direction for institution of a CBI probe into the massive admission and recruitment scam.
