Faulkner to lead Australia A for 4-day series against India A

James Faulkner to lead Australia A
Faulkner, who has been a part of IPL in 2011 (Pune Warriors), 2012 (Kings XI Punjab) and 2013 (Rajasthan Royals), has stood in 19 ODIs for the Aussies and played a single Test.

CA chairman of selectors Rodney Marsh expects Faulkner, 24, to perform well. "James is a young man with plenty of character and possesses a great desire to win," Marsh said.

"He is still developing as an all-rounder but we believe this captaincy provides him an opportunity to do that as well as develop his leadership skills," he said.

Meanwhile, middle-order batsman Cameron White will lead the one-day squad in a quadrangular series post the two unofficial Tests. Marsh believes White's huge experience in limited-overs cricket will benefit the ODI team.

"Cameron White has been selected as captain of the one-day team for the quad series in Darwin. Cam White is a very good captain with loads of experience and will set a fine leadership example to the younger players," Marsh said.

Some known Australian players including Josh Hazlewood, Moises Henriques, Phillip Hughes, Chris Lynn and Mitchell Marsh are part of both the sides.

Australia A take on India A in two four-day matches from July 6-17 in Brisbane, then move to Darwin for the one-day series from July 19 - August 2 before concluding with two four-day matches against South Africa A in Townsville from August 7-17.

Squad:

Cameron Boyce, Ben Cutting, Alex Doolan, James Faulkner (c), Peter Forrest, Josh Hazlewood, Moises Henriques, Phillip Hughes, Chris Lynn, Mitchell Marsh, Kane Richardson, Chadd Sayers, Sam Whiteman.

ICC panel dwells on menace of suspect actions

Representational picture
In a two-day meeting in Bangalore, the committee, headed by former India captain Anil Kumble, felt more needs to be done to check illegal bowling actions.

"The committee discussed the issue of illegal bowling actions, and believed that there are a number of bowlers currently employing suspect actions in international cricket, and that the ICC's reporting and testing procedures are not adequately scrutinising these bowlers," the ICC said in a statement.

"It recommended that changes be considered to encourage umpires and referees to identify suspect bowlers with greater confidence, to use the expertise of the biomechanists working in this area to assume a greater role during the assessment process, and to allow for ongoing scrutiny of bowlers once they have been identified under the ICC procedures," it added.

The ICC Cricket Committee makes recommendations on cricket playing issues to the Chief Executives' Committee (CEC) and, if it is a policy matter, the ICC Board for approval.

Both the CEC and the ICC Board are scheduled to meet during the ICC annual conference week in Melbourne from June 22-28.

The ICC Cricket Committee comprises representatives of many stakeholder groups involved in the modern game, including players, umpires and the media.

"Members of the committee were also updated on the project to increase the number of illegal action testing centres around the cricketing world, noting that Cardiff Metropolitan University was now accredited to conduct illegal action testing for the ICC, and that other facilities in India, Australia, England and South Africa were likely to be accredited over coming months," the ICC said.

The issue of illegal bowling actions came to the fore recently when Sri Lankan off-spinner Sachithra Senanayake was reported for using an illegal action during the series against
England.

Bowlers with suspect actions are currently required to attend ICC-approved biomechanics laboratory tests to assess the amount of elbow extension (flex). In 2004, the ICC set a 15-degree limit on this extension.

"They (the committee) also received an update on the project to measure illegal actions in a match environment using wearable sensor technology," the ICC stated.

"The second stage of the project has just concluded, with 70 players being tested by wearing the sensors at training sessions during the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2014 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The results of the trials were very encouraging, with the final stage of the project expected to conclude in 2016," it added.

Somdev, Yuki to lead Indian challenge at Delhi Open

Delhi Open
After a long wait, the country's players have got the opportunity to play in back-to-back Challenger events in India and the players have relished the chance to compete in a field, which features top players.

Yuki won the first leg in Chennai and Somdev reached semifinals of both Chennai and Kolkata events while players such as Sanam Singh and Saketh Myneni too did well.

The field for the Delhi Open has two top-100 players, including Somdev and top seed from Kazakhstan Aleksandr Nedovyesov apart from six more players in top-160.

Somdev has been countering not only his rivals but also his own indifferent form as he has struggled against his lower-ranked compatriots of late. The week ahead will be full of challenges for India's number one player and it gives him a good preparation for the gruelling season ahead.

Delhi boy Yuki has been on a roll in the last three-four months and with the kind of form he has displayed since the start of the season, he will be a serious title contender.

However, the road would not be easy as players such as Ilija Bozoljac, who triumphed at the Kolkata leg, Alexander Kudryavtsev and Evgeny Donskoy are all tough customers.

Sixth seed Yuki will open his campaign against Frenchman Lucas Pouille and is expected to run into big serving compatriot Saketh in the second round and if that hurdle is cleared, he may find top seed Nedovyesov in the quarterfinals.

Somdev will clash with compatriot Karunuday Singh, who has been given a wild card entry, in his opening round and may find Japanese fifth seed Go Soeda in the last-eight.
