Meghalaya's UDP names Paul Lyngdoh for Lok Sabha poll

Representational Picture
The Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP) and the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) have refused to support Lyngdoh, but the National People's Party has promised to support the UDP nominee.

"The party has unanimously accepted that Lyngdoh should be the candidate for the Parliamentary elections. We have sought the support of other regional parties like the HSPDP and the KHNAM, but both have proposed other candidates to replace Lyngdoh. However, it is not possible to accept their proposal," said UDP president Donkupar Roy.

Top UDP leaders held several consultations with the HSPDP and KHNAM leaders to garner support for Lyngdoh as the common candidate from the Shillong parliamentary constituency.

The UDP president said talks with the two parties would continue in the days ahead to ensure that Lyngdoh receives their support. Both HSPDP and KHNAM have instead proposed former deputy chief minister Bindo M Lanong or legislator Jemino Mawthoh in place of Lyngdoh. Both Lanong and Mawthoh belong to the UDP.

"It is difficult for us to replace Lyngdoh since the UDP had been projecting the legislator's candidature for the past few months, and moreover, according to the assessment done by the party, he (Lyngdoh) has a better chance of winning compared to other candidates," Roy said.

AAP may emerge as ‘third force’ in MP: Alok Agarwal

Representational picture
"Be it the BJP or Congress, both the parties indulge in politics of loot. People of this region are fed up with them. There is a strong possibility of Aam Aadmi Party emerging as the third force, as the voters are now looking for a better alternative," the 46-year-old leader said on Sunday.

Agarwal, who is a 1989-batch graduate in chemical engineering from IIT Kanpur, claimed the Aam Aadmi Party can provide a strong alternative to the voters of the state. He said the entire organizational network of Narmada Bachao Aandolan is supporting AAP.

Announcing the launch of his campaign for the elections, he said, “During the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, while raising the national issues like unemployment and inflation, we would also take up the local issues.”

Apart from corruption and poverty, we would also raise burning issues like rise in crimes against women and the problems of farmers and tribals, he said.

Agarwal will be contesting from Khandwa seat, which is presently represented by state Congress president and former union minister Arun Yadav.

He alleged that Yadav had forgotten the Khandwa constituency ever since his victory in 2009 and failed to raise issues of the region.
