Sanitary napkin vending machine installed at women's college in Lucknow

Unavailability of sanitary pads, absence of separate toilets for girls and lack of water in toilets reflect on the attendance of girls in schools and colleges. Surveys have claimed that nearly 20 to 30 per cent of girls in North India dropped out of schools after they started menstruating.

While talking about menstrual hygiene remains a taboo in the country, the 'bold step' of installing an automated sanitary vending machine for its students has been taken by one of the prestigious and oldest women's colleges the Avadh Girl's Degree College under Lucknow University.

"We installed the machine around a week back and response from the students is very good," AGDC Manager Nishi Pandey told the media. "In fact we are also considering to install a disposal machine as well, as the pads are not disposed of hygienically," she added. Students create ruckus in Lucknow over minor dispute

Lucknow University
The fight started after the students tried to leave a sweet shop in Daliganj market without paying. When asked for money, they started vandalizing the shop after which the traders chased them. The students retreated only to resurface in large numbers, armed with pistols and local bombs. They fired several rounds in the air and beat up anyone who came in their way.

Police were deployed in large numbers and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) companies were rushed in to contain the violence. Students indulged in brick-batting and damaged several vehicles.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Navniet Sikera and Senior Superintendent of Police Pravin Kumar rushed to the spot to control the situation. With the students refusing to disperse, police had to lob tear gas shells at them.

Police officers said that the situation was tense but under control on Monday morning. Police have seized the CCTV footage from the sweet shop to identify the miscreants, Sikera said.
