Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended birthday greetings to Rahul, who thanked him for the wishes. After many years, Rahul will be in the national capital on his birthday and Congress workers have made elaborate arrangements to celebrate the occasion.

However, scores of Congress workers celebrated the birthday of party vice-president Rahul Gandhi with fanfare bursting crackers and raining flower petals outside his residence here.

Rahul's mother and Congress president Sonia Gandhi drove to his 12, Tughalq Lane residence, outside which a large gathering of Congress workers, led by Jagdish Sharma, celebrated the occasion with cutting cake and singing in praise of Rahul's leadership.

Sonia wielded real power as 'extra-constitutional' authority during UPA regime: PM Modi

Dismissing the Congress President's accusation that NDA government was showing "obstinate arrogance" in Parliament and that it was a government by "one person", Modi said, "Perhaps, she is referring to the fact that earlier extra constitutional authorities were the ones really wielding power".

He went on to say that power was now "wielded only by constitutional means". "If the charge is that we are working through constitutional channels and not listening to any extra constitutional authorities, then I plead guilty to that charge," PM Modi said.

The  Prime Minister spoke about the attacks on him by Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, the Land Acquisition and GST Bills, criticism of his foreign tours, "concentration" of power in PMO, reforms and a wide variety of other topics in an interview to a news agency.

Hitting back at Rahul for his "suit-boot ki sarkar" jibe, Modi said the Congress had not been able to "digest" its crushing defeat in Lok Sabha polls even after one year.

Modi government trying to snatch farmers' land for corporates: Rahul

The Congress vice president, who undertook a 15-km 'padyatra' (foot march) through five villages in scorching heat and met families of farmers who committed suicide due to mounting debt in Adilabad district, hit out at the NDA Government for attempting to "dilute" the Land Acquisition Act passed by Congress-led UPA Government in 2013.

"Modiji and mini-Modiji claim to change India and Telangana, but they forgot the poor who actually transform the country," Rahul said, without naming Rao. "If Modiji or the Chief Minister here meet farmers then I don't have to (worry about them)," he added.

“The Government is not making use of thousands of acres of land lying unused in SEZs, but is attempting to take away land from farmers,” he charged.

The NDA Government as well the TRS Government led by K Chandrasekhar Rao in Telangana claim to work for 'Make in India' and providing jobs, Rahul said and asked if anyone in the gathering had got a job after the two Governments assumed office about a year ago.

Rahul Gandhi appears in Maharashtra Court in RSS defamation case

The Congress Vice President presented himself before Magistrate D P Kale in line with the commitment given by his counsel on March 30. The court posted the case for September 30.

Rahul, who spent less than 15 minutes in court, told reporters that he had come to honour the commitment given to the court.

"We respect the judiciary, that is why I am here. I had made a commitment to the court. I am here to fulfill that commitment," Rahul said in a post on his official twitter handle.

"The fight which Gandhi ji fought is our fight. We will fight that and we will win," another tweet said.

He arrived in Mumbai this morning on way to Bengaluru and drove to Thane.

The Supreme Court had on Thursday stayed the proceedings against him in the criminal defamation case filed by Rajesh Kunte, an RSS functionary, before Bhiwandi trial court for allegedly blaming RSS for the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.

"There shall be stay of further proceedings in a case pending before the trial court till the next date of hearing," a bench comprising Justices Dipak Misra and P C Pant had said on Saturday.

The court had also tagged Rahul's petition in which he has also challenged the constitutional validity of the panel provisions dealing with criminal defamation along with that of politicians of rival parities, BJP's Subramanian Swamy and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Rajesh Kunte, the complainan , had alleged that the Congress leader said at an election rally at Sonale in Thane district on March 6 last year that an RSS worker killed Mahatma Gandhi. Kunte is secretary of the Bhiwandi unit of RSS.

Rahul Gandhi takes jibe at PM Modi's foreign tours; triggers uproar in Lok Sabha

"Again his (PM's) tour is on the cards. He has come here for sometime. He should visit Punjab and he will know first hand what is happening to farmers," the Congress Vice President said, triggering uproar as BJP members protested.

Raising the issue of farmers during Zero Hour a day after his visit to mandis in Punjab, Gandhi said he wanted to apprise the House of the pain and problems of the state's farmers whose produce is lying in mandis and is not being procured by the government.

The refrain of Gandhi was that the NDA government had left the farmer to fend for himself.

Amid protests by BJP members, Gandhi took a swipe at the Prime Minister's 'Make in India' initiative, questioning whether farmers are not contributing to 'Make in India' by providing food to the entire country.

"When there was hailstorm, the government did not help. State governments used to give bonus, farmers tolerated its non-payment. Farmers were lathicharged when they asked for fertiliser. Now their produce is not being lifted from mandis," he said.

Kisan rally not comeback platform for Rahul: Congress

Congress spokesperson Deepender Singh Hooda also sought to justify party Vice President Rahul Gandhi's nearly two-month-long sabbatical and absence from parliament, saying: "It's the prerogative of the media and the people to interpret whatever they can, but the fact remains that this is the fight for the farmers. It's a rally for the rights of the farmers," Singh, a Rohtak MP, told mediapersons here.

"Besides putting pressure on the Narendra Modi government for withdrawal of the bill, we will demand higher compensation for farmers hit by unseasonal rains,” he said.

Having remained out of the public eye for nearly two months, Rahul Gandhi, who returned to his official residence in Delhi on Thursday morning, is slated to spearhead the kisan (farmer) rally on Sunday.

Hooda also sought to defend Gandhi's absence from parliament when the bill was being discussed, saying: "Rahul's 2011 agitation in Bhatta Parsaul (Uttar Pradesh) against forcible land acquisition culminated in the enactment of the Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013. He played a major role in formulating the original bill."

“And so far as his absence is concerned, I have never come across any professional who has not taken a break. The party has already given answers on his break so I don't think there is anything more to say," Hooda added.

Digvijay doesn't rule out Rahul taking Congress command soon

"Let's see," was Singh's reply when asked about reports of the Gandhi scion taking over as AICC president in the party convention to be held this year.

Rahul Gandhi would be among other leaders who would attend the farmers rally against the land bill proposed to be organised by Congress on April 19 in Delhi under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi, he told reporters here.

As for Rahul Gandhi staying away from the Budget session of Parliament, he evaded a direct reply and said, "All of us, his foot-soldiers are present here".

The Congress Vice-President has been the party leader and would continue to be so, he added.

Condemning the remarks of Union Minister Giriraj Singh on Sonia Gandhi, he added the Congress demands not only a public apology from the Minister but also seeks his dismissal from the Cabinet.

"But, knowing Mr (Narendra) Modi, he will not only keep him in cabinet, we won't be surprised if he is promoted also," he cited.

Congress seeks to ignore Rahul Gandhi posters issue

"The Congress Vice President will return in the proximate future," party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said in reply to queries on the issue.

Seeking to give a twist to the queries on when exactly Rahul will come back, he remarked "absence makes the heart go fonder."

Reports from Amethi, the constituency represented by the Congress leader, spoke of posters showing "Rahul Gandhi missing" surfacing at several public places including the railway station.

The posters, with the bearded picture of the Amethi MP, have requested Rahul to return soon.

Titled "Amethi Without a Leader", the posters use a Hindi film song to convey their message - "Jaane woh kaunsa desh, jahan tum chale gaye (who knows where you have gone)."

Rahul Gandhi takes potshots at PM Modi, downplays 'Clean Indian Campaign'

While both the Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Vice President Rahul Gandhi did not take the name of Modi, the reference was obvious when they spoke at a party function on the eve of the 125th birth anniversary of Nehru here.

Rahul Gandhi said that "angry" people are nowadays running the country and had a dig at Modi over the "Swachchta Abhiyan" saying "photo opportunities" are galore.

"These days, the foundation of love and brotherhood is being demolished. On one hand houses are being painted and roads are being cleaned. Photo opportunities are happening. Snaps are being taken. On the other hand, poison is being spread. The very foundations are being weakened," Gandhi said.

In her speech made in the presence of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and former Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit, Sonia Gandhi asked party men to be united and strengthen the organisations and connect and fight those forces out to demolish Nehru's vision of a liberal India.

Modi is akin to Indira Gandhi, Rahul is no leader: Book

The book, "2014 The Election That Changed India" (Penguin/Viking), also says that Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi has failed to show any quality as a leader and is hardly respected by his own party colleagues.

"Modi is perhaps closest to Indira Gandhi in his personality driven leadership style, an imperious attitude that ensures that institutions remain subservient to the individual," the riveting 372-page book says.

"Much like Indira, Modi in power is in no mood to reach out to the opposition," says Sardesai, referring to the Bharatiya Janata Party's refusal to recognize the Congress as the leader of the opposition in parliament.

Modi, the book says, is determined to exercise tight control over the cabinet system.

"There is a certain fear factor that Modi has instilled in his cabinet colleagues," the author says, adding how a minister in the Modi government told him (Sardesai) to enter his house from the back entrance.

The unnamed minister also insisted that they do not speak in his main hall but in the garden behind the residence.

"You never know which room is bugged nowadays!" the minister is quoted as saying.
According to the book, the original list of cabinet and other ministers in Modi's government was prepared by Modi confidants Arun Jaitley and Amit Shah and then vetted by the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS).

"The final touches, including portfolio distribution, were done by the prime minister himself,” the book said.
