Tehelka case: Tip off led to prison raid, says Goa CM Parrikar

Speaking at a public function here, Parrikar alleged that Tejpal from whom a mobile phone was allegedly recovered during a raid on February 23 was speaking to Delhi-based journalists every morning.

"There are journalists in Delhi who reported us that he was speaking to reporters from Delhi every morning," Parrikar said.

"The intelligence (for the raid) came from the Delhi press," he added.

Nine mobile phones were allegedly found in the Sada prison complex housing Tejpal.

Prison officials claim that a SIM card was also found in the editor's shirt collar. Tejpal, however, told the raiding team that the phone could belong to another inmate living in his cell.

While prison authorities had called the raid ‘routine’, Parrikar claimed the raid was made possible because of ‘good’ journalists, who co-operated with the government agencies.

The Goa Chief Minister was last week accused of insulting the journalist community in Goa, by questioning their educational qualifications, net worth and intellect.

Probe in Tejpal case sets a benchmark: Goa Chief Minister

Manohar Parrikar
"This is a benchmark investigation after the (Delhi's) Nirbhaya case," Parrikar said, reacting to the filing of the charge sheet against the founder-editor of Tehelka by the Goa crime branch.

“The police have done a meticulous investigation in this case,” he claimed.

Within 80 days of registration of the FIR, Goa police today filed a 2,684-page chargesheet against Tejpal, in jail since December 1, under sections 354, 354-A (sexual harassment), 341 and 342 (wrongful restraint), 376 (rape), 376(2)(f) and 376 (2)(k) (taking advantage of official position and raping a woman in custody) of IPC.

Tejpal is accused of sexually assaulting a young woman journalist, his colleague, at a hotel in Panaji on November 7 and 8 last year.
