Time to shift focus away from Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi, says Somdev

Somdev Devvarman
India thrashed Chinese Taipei 5-0 in the Asia/Oceania Group I tie here and Somdev said although the team will forever remain grateful the contribution that Paes and Bhupathi made, the time has come to look ahead.

“Let's not focus on Leander and Mahesh. Let's focus on the youngsters. Jeevan asked 15 times during and before and after my match what I need. And he knows I will do the same when he will play. So we are all here helping out each other,” Somdev said.

“I think the focus should not be there on Leander or Mahesh. The focus should be on the group of guys who are here. The focus should be on the new captain. Because this is the future,” he said.

“We appreciate everything they have given us but now we need to move on. Mahesh has said he is done this year. Leander is a fantastic player, unfortunately he is not available for national duty this year but we will just go ahead. No matter, who is there or not there. We will try to make the best of whatever we have,” he added.

HIL: Delhi Waveriders look to tame debutants Lancers on home turf

Hockey India League
Delhi conceded a late goal against defending champions Ranchi Rhinos on Monday after a perfect start to their campaign in the second edition of HHIL. The Sardar Singh-led side defeated Jaypee Punjab Warriors 3-1 in their tournament opener.

Delhi displayed some stout defending against the Rhinos but the forward line disappointed the side as they failed to convert some really good opportunities.

After being completely outplayed in the first half, the Delhi outfit came back strongly and put up a better show in the second period. But a 63rd minute penalty-corner strike from Ashley Jackson downed the Waveriders in a keenly-contested match.

The Waveriders would be hoping for a better outing from the likes of Jason Wilson, Yuvraj Valmiki, Simon Child, Rupinderpal Singh and others against the Lancers, who looked completely out of sorts in their 3-7 defeat against Jaypee Punjab Warriors in their opening match of the event.

And come Thursday, the Delhi side would be hoping to score goals early against a the newcomers, who are trying to find footing in the six-team franchise league.

The services of ever-reliable Nicolas Jacobi of Germany under the bar gives Delhi's defense an added cushion.
