Nepal struck by another powerful earthquake, tremors felt across India

At least four people were killed in Nepal after quake struck the country. However, there was no immediate report of any casualty from any of the states in India.

The quake measuring 7.3 on Richter Scale struck at 12:35 PM, some 70 kilometres east of Kathmandu at a depth of 18.5 kilometres, Indian Meteorological Department said, adding three aftershocks of 6.2, 5.4 and 4.8 followed the quake.

Panic-stricken people were seen rushing out of buildings in various areas of Delhi, Bihar, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh. The tremors lasted for around one minute.

The Home Ministry said there was also a near simultaneous earthquake epicentred in Afghanistan which measured 6.9 on Richter Scale.

The April 25 earthquake which measured 7.9 on Richter Scale had claimed over 8,000 lives in Nepal. Nearly 80 people were also killed in India, mostly in Bihar, due to the temblor.

In Kolkata, hundreds of people ran out of their homes and offices into the streets.


In Bihar capital Patna, people were seen running away from building into open spaces. Similar reports were coming from Assam and other eastern states. The tremors were also felt as far as Chennai.

The Delhi Secretariat as well as many government buildings were evacuated immediately after the quake. Authorities said there was no immediate report of any major damage. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has directed all senior officials to monitor the situation.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia has also sought reports from all District Magistrates about extent of damage in their areas.

Earthquake: Death toll reaches four in Nepal, two in Bihar

State Disaster Management control room said they have received report of death of another person in Siwan district due to wall collapse after the quake.

According to state Meteorological department, the first temblor measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale was felt in Patna and other parts of the state at 12:35 PM.

Even before the people could recover from the shock, a second quake was experienced at 1:09 PM measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale, the Met office said.

Around 12 school students were injured in Zila public school under Vishvidyalaya police station in the melee to run to safety from class rooms after the quakes, a report from Darbhanga quoting school authority and parents said.

The earthquake triggered panic in many areas. In the capital city Patna, citizens were seen running out from buildings into open spaces.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who was at his 7 Circular Road residence rushed out of the building into the lawn, sources in the CM residence said.

Sources in Raj Bhawan said Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi, who was in his chamber came out of the building, due to the temblor.

People who had assembled for a book release programme at the Raj Bhawan also ran out to the lawn...
