Farmers suicide: Parties must together find credible solution, says Manmohan

 

His remarks came a day after a farmer from Rajasthan committed suicide during a rally organised by AAP here.

"This is a great tragedy that farmers are committing suicide. It is not a one party issue. All parties in Parliament and outside must pool in their wisdom, knowledge and experience to find a credible solution to this issue," he said speaking to reporters in the Parliament complex.

Congress, Trinamool demand judicial probe into farmer's suicide

Congress leader in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge hoped that the government will institute a judicial probe into the incident."An inquiry by police will be one-sided," Kharge said.

He urged the government to spell out relief steps for farmers in terms of loan waiver, compensation and minimum support price.

Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy also demanded a judicial inquiry."The home minister should order a judicial inquiry as to why nobody reacted and the drama was played out in full view," he said.

Gajendra Singh, a farmer from Rajasthan whose crops were destroyed by unseasonal rain, hanged himself from a tree here during the AAP rally on Wednesday, held to protest against the controversial land ordinance.

Sonia Gandhi seeks compensation for farmers hit by unseasonal rains

Her visit to the state comes amid increased focus of the party on farmers' issues and its strident opposition to the NDA government's controversial land ordinance, which has brought opposition parties on one platform.
  
"What do they want? They just want relief.I appeal to the government to give right and timely compensation to these farmers. That is what the government's responsibility is," she said during her visit to Bhadra village in Bhiwani district.
  
Gandhi, who is on a day-long visit to the state, is also visiting Gurwara village falling under Rohtak Parliamentary seat, represented by Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda.
  
In the later part of the day she will visit Surakhpur, Jakkhala Road, Gudiani, Mubarikpur chowk and Rattanthal villages of Rohtak apart from visiting Karnal.
  
The Congress President had yesterday visited villages in Kota district of Rajasthan where she met farmers, who have suffered crop and livestock losses, and expressed solidarity with them.
