Facebook's Moments app uses facial recognition technology to group photos

Tech News  "It's hard to get the photos your friends have taken of you, and everyone always insists on taking that same group shot with multiple phones to ensure they get a copy," product manager Will Ruben said in a blog post.

"When you go to a wedding, for example, there are many people taking great photos throughout the day. You all want a quick way to share your photos with the friends who are in them, and get photos that you're in back. The same is true for smaller events too, like a kayak trip or a night out," Ruben said.

The new application allows users to create groups that sync photos to friends. Moments uses facial recognition technology to group photos based on the friends who are in them, similar to the "tagging" used by the Facebook social network.

The new app was launched Monday for users of Apple and Android handsets in the United States, and will be rolled out to other countries over time.

Unique lens turns smartphone into microscope

Tech News - It can magnify images by a magnitude of 120 -- all for just three cents (Rs.1.20) a lens.

"The lens attaches directly to a smartphone camera lens without the use of any additional device. It makes it ideal for use with younger students in the classroom," said Wei-Chuan Shih, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering.

For the study, researchers captured images of a human skin-hair follicle histological slide with both the smartphone-PDMS system and an Olympus IX-70 microscope.

At a magnification of 120, the smartphone lens was comparable to the Olympus microscope at a magnification of 100 and software-based digital magnification could enhance it further, the team reported.

The lens is made of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), a polymer with the consistency of honey, dropped precisely on a preheated surface to cure.Lens curvature and magnification depends on how long and at what temperature the PDMS is heated.

The resulting lenses are flexible, similar to a soft contact lens, although they are thicker and
slightly smaller.

"Our lens can transform a smartphone camera into a microscope by simply attaching the lens without any supporting attachments or mechanism," the researchers wrote.

The strong, yet non-permanent adhesion between PDMS and glass allows the lens to be easily detached after use. It could also have clinical applications, allowing small or isolated clinics to share images with specialists located elsewhere.

Twitter to track apps on your smartphone

"To help build a more personal Twitter experience for you, we are collecting and occasionally updating the list of apps installed on your mobile device so we can deliver tailored content that you might be interested in," explained a post on Twitter website.

The company wants to use the 'app graph' to give more tailored content, give suggestions on whom to follow plus add tweets and other content to your timeline.

"We are only collecting the list of applications you have installed. We are not collecting any data within the applications," the post clarifies.

Recently, Twitter had started showing tweets from users people didn't follow, using an algorithm to identify likely favourites.

The website also recommends whom to follow based on people in a user's network. Now knowing which apps its users have gives more information to work upon.

Users have the option to stop the data collection at any time from their phone settings.
