Facebook looks like it’s going to stop paying publishers to make live videos

Facebook spent more than $50 million last year paying publishers and celebrities to create live video on the social network.

Now numerous publishers tell Recode that Facebook is de-emphasizing live video when it talks to them. And none of the publishers we’ve spoken with expect Facebook to renew the paid livestreaming deals it signed last spring to get live video off the ground.

Instead, Facebook is pushing publishers to create longer, premium video content as part of a larger effort led by Facebook exec Ricky Van Veen. The hope is to get more high-quality video onto the platform and into your News Feed — the kind of stuff, presumably, you might find on Netflix.

Facebook may pay publishers for that stuff, instead of paying them to make live video, a format Mark Zuckerberg was “obsessed” with last year. Late last year, Recode reported that Van Veen is having discussions with some creators to license TV-style shows.

Those deals might make sense for companies that already make longform video, like TV studios and movie houses, but it’s unclear if digital publishers that are part of the live video program will be paid to make the kind of stuff Van Veen is looking for. Vox Media, the company that owns Recode, is a current Facebook Live partner.

Facebook's Moments app uses facial recognition technology to group photos

Tech News  "It's hard to get the photos your friends have taken of you, and everyone always insists on taking that same group shot with multiple phones to ensure they get a copy," product manager Will Ruben said in a blog post.

"When you go to a wedding, for example, there are many people taking great photos throughout the day. You all want a quick way to share your photos with the friends who are in them, and get photos that you're in back. The same is true for smaller events too, like a kayak trip or a night out," Ruben said.

The new application allows users to create groups that sync photos to friends. Moments uses facial recognition technology to group photos based on the friends who are in them, similar to the "tagging" used by the Facebook social network.

The new app was launched Monday for users of Apple and Android handsets in the United States, and will be rolled out to other countries over time.

No decision on getting Facebook, Twitter servers to India: Government

Tech News - "The government has not decided to get servers of popular social networking sites, like hike, Facebook, Twitter etc established within the country," Communications and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said in a written reply to Lok Sabha.

He, however, said the government regularly interacts with all stakeholders including social media providers to resolve the issues arising from time to time, related to handling of unlawful content on the internet.

The Minister said security agencies face difficulty while dealing with encrypted communications provided by various service providers.

World over several service providers are providing services like WhatsApp, Viber, WeChat, Skype, Yahoo, Gmail for sharing audio, video, image, email, data and accessing other web services anytime and anywhere in a secure manner, Prasad said.

He added the security of these services is achieved through encryption technology and these services are mostly availed by the citizens across the world through internet.

"At times these services may also used by anti-national and criminal elements, which pose a security threat," the Minister said.

Prasad added the government has mandated all the telecom service providers including internet service providers to provide the lawful interception and monitoring facilities to the security agencies for all the services including WhatsApp, Viber etc.

Committed to exercise? Stay away from Facebook

Tech News - Researchers found that the prospect of workout goals being shared on social media led fewer people to set weekly goals.

At the same time, the sharing led to emotional encouragement, logistical assistance and accountability that may have helped study participants, who all were classified as obese, up their step counts by an average of about a half mile per day.

"One of the most common recommendations for people who want to lose weight is to share their plan with family and friends. The theory is that being accountable to, and encouraged by, their social support system will increase their chances of reaching goals," said Paul Resnick, the Michael D Cohen Collegiate Profession of Information at the University of Michigan.

But the researchers at the University of Michigan and University of Washington found that sharing was a two-edged sword.

"Public accountability is great, but not if it keeps you from making commitments in the first place," Resnick said.

In the 12-week, randomised, controlled clinical trial, the researchers gave 165 people classified as obese FitBit pedometers and access to a custom website they had created.

Facebook launches open Internet.org platform amid net neutrality debate in India

Tech News -  However, Reliance Communications remains the only Indian telecom partner as of now on this platform, which has seen entities like Cleartrip and NDTV walking out.

"The platform will be open to all developers who meet certain guidelines, including content that can be browsed on both feature and smartphones and on limited bandwidth," Internet.org Vice President Product Chris Daniels said.

The move comes amid raging debate in the country on Net Neutrality, which stands for equal treatment to be accorded to all Internet traffic.

The principle states that no priority would be given to an entity or company based on payment to service providers like telecom companies, which is seen as discriminatory.

The debate in India has also been triggered by mobile operator Airtel introducing an open marketing platform 'Airtel 0Zero', and TRAI's consultation paper on whether telecom firms can be allowed to charge different rates for different uses of Internet data like email, Internet browsing and use of apps like Whatsapp, Viber and Sky.

In India, Internet.org had partnered with Reliance Communications in February this year to provide free Internet access to 33 websites as part of its Internet.org initiative raised eyebrows, with free Internet supporters saying that it violates the idea of Net Neutrality.

Facebook integrates WhatsApp into 'Facebook for Android'

Tech News -  The social networking site has added a 'Send' button with the familiar WhatsApp icon as a part of the status actions buttons that appear under each status update.

The new button appears on the right side (for left-to-right languages) for some users in the most recent version of the Facebook for Android app, media reported.

This move appears to be the first step towards connecting the two platforms in order to sustain growth and take control of the messaging market together.

According to reports, teams are already working on a deeper integration that will include the ability to send messages between Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp.

WhatsApp, which last said it had 700 million monthly active users, and was acquired by Facebook for over USD 20 billion in February last year.

Judge orders Facebook and Zuckerberg to turn over documents

Tech News - US District Judge Vernon Broderick on Friday ordered Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg to relinquish documents by Monday that were requested by Paul Ceglia's lawyer, Robert Ross Fogg.

The judge said he received a letter Thursday from lawyers for Facebook Inc. and Zuckerberg asking that an order he issued earlier in the week to promptly turn over requested documents be suspended until Ceglia is caught.

Documents requested include all electronic communications Zuckerberg had about a Ceglia contract during an 18-month stretch beginning in 2003.

With a May 4 trial approaching, Ceglia cut off his electronic ankle bracelet last month and fled. His wife, two children and dog also are missing from their home in Wellsville, 112 kilometres southeast of Buffalo.

Ceglia's father told Broderick at a hearing last week that he believed his son might have fled because he believed Facebook and Zuckerberg were working together with prosecutors against him, jeopardising his chance for a fair trial. The judge said he would not allow a trial to proceed unjustly.

Facebook's new app 'Riff' allows users to make posted videos go viral

Tech News - According to a report, when users create a Riff video for the first time, they can tag a friend and make it trend.

The app is available on both iOS and Android mobile devices. It originated after last year's ALS Ice Bucket Challenge when people began posting videos of them upturning buckets of ice water on their heads in the name of charity.

Josh Miller, the product manager of Facebook's Creative Labs said that the aim is to make these videos grow as big as possible to get as many views and as many clips.

Snapchat has a similar feature "Our Stories" that looks like an inspiration for Riff with its crowd sourced collection of photos and videos tied to popular events around the world.

Had raised concern in Rajya Sabha three years back over misuse of IT Act: Jaitley

"Powers are, normally, assumed under these rules on the assumption that they won't be misused. We feel the pinch only when they are misused. Therefore, I would urge the (IT) Minister to kindly reconsider the language of the kind of restraints that he wants to bring as a result of this notification," read Jaitley's post on the social media website quoting from the said speech.

Jaitley had made the remarks while participating in a debate on Information Technology (Intermediaries Guidelines) Rules, 2011, under the Information Technology Act, 2000, in the Upper House on May 17, 2012.

The guidelines were introduced by the previous UPA government to fix accountability of websites, internet and other companies for hosting information that may be found to be offensive.

Supreme Court on Tuesday struck down Section 66A of IT Act saying it was "unconstitutional" and could have a "chilling effect" on freedom of speech and expression.

Put smartphone away to rekindle romance

"The 'technoference' ranges from picking up the phone while partners are casually hanging out to checking Facebook while in the middle of an argument," said study author Sarah Coyne, psychologist at the Utah-based Brigham Young University in US.

To reach this conclusion, researchers surveyed 143 married or cohabiting heterosexual women and asked them about their phone, TV, computer and tablet habits.

Nearly 62 percent of women reported that the most common issue was their partner fiddling with the phone during leisure time, MPRnews reported. A quarter of them said their partner sent texts or emails to people during a face-to-face conversation.

According to Coyne, keeping the phone out of reach would lead to overall life satisfaction.

The results appeared in the journal Psychology of Popular Media Culture.
