'NASA MESSENGER' spacecraft to crash into Mercury soon

Tech News - The "spacecraft will impact the planet at more than 8,750 miles per hour on the side of the planet facing away from Earth," NASA said in a statement on Thursday.

"Due to the expected location, engineers will be unable to view in real time the exact location of impact," a news agency reported.

Launched in August 2004, MESSENGER traveled 7.9 billion km on a journey that included 15 trips around the sun and flybys of Earth once, Venus twice and Mercury three times.

The spacecraft began orbiting Mercury in March 2011. The four- year mission was blessed with many scientific findings, including one in 2012 that provided compelling support for the hypothesis that Mercury harbors abundant frozen water and other volatile materials in its permanently shadowed polar craters.

It helped test many technological achievements, including the development of a vital heat-resistant and highly reflective ceramic cloth sunshade that isolated the spacecraft's instruments and electronics from direct solar radiation, vital to mission success given Mercury's proximity to the sun.

Hindu Cremation Ceremony Of Human Body At Manikarnika Ghat Varanasi

Gadget Reviews India - The company's rural sales had increased by 23 percent to 4,15,380 units in last fiscal, when it posted its highest ever total sales in a financial year. It had posted total sales of 12,92,415 units in 2014-15 beating previous best in 2010-11.

"In FY14-15 we established presence in 1.25 lakh villages. Target going forward will be to enhance presence in 1.5 lakh villages," Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) Executive Director, Marketing & Sales, RS Kalsi said.

In 2013-14, the company had established its presence in 93,400 villages across the country.

"In FY14-15 our penetration in rural areas stood at 34.5 percent (of total sales) as compared to 32 percent in FY 13-14," Kalsi said.

The company's rural sales had stood at 3,36,463 units in 2013-14 financial year, he added.

"At the start of the year (FY14-15), we targeted to sell at least one vehicle in 1.25 lakh villages. We have been able to reach even the smallest of villages- today more than 7 percent of MSI's sales are coming from villages with less than 200 households," Kalsi said.

He added that sales in rural areas have been impacted due to delayed monsoon and recent unseasonal rains but evinced hope that things would improve in the coming days.

"Barring the current situation, the long term growth story of rural India looks good and promising..As infrastructural jobs reach rural India, the dependency on agriculture may come down," Kalsi said.

Now, an app will unlock your doors

Tech News - Your friends, family, or even the plumber could download the app, you could give them a code, and they get in, media reported.

You can even have that code expire, meaning they will only be able to access the door for a limited time.

The 'August' lock costs about USD 250 and another USD 250 to install it.

Inspiring as it may sound, security experts are not very enthusiastic about it. Because mobile phones are hackable and if your phone is hacked, you will lose access to your own house.

"The population in the planet can now get into your pocket and wallet, electronically from China or some other place.

Smartphones to produce high-resolution 3D images

This feat may soon be possible because of a new tiny high-resolution 3D imager developed by researchers at California Institute of Technology.

Tech News - The cheap, compact yet highly accurate new device known as a nanophotonic coherent imager (NCI) uses inexpensive silicon chip less than a millimeter square in size. The NCI provides the highest depth-measurement accuracy of any such nanophotonic 3D imaging device.

"The small size and high quality of this new chip-based imager will result in significant cost reductions, which will enable thousands of new uses for such systems by incorporating them into personal devices such as smartphones," explained Ali Hajimiri, Thomas G. Myers professor of electrical engineering.

The new chip uses an established detection and ranging technology called LIDAR, in which a target object is illuminated with scanning laser beams.

The first proof of concept of the NCI has only 16 coherent pixels, meaning that the 3D images it produces can only be 16 pixels at any given instance. In the future, Hajimiri said, that the current array of 16 pixels could also be easily scaled up to hundreds of thousands.

Hyundai Motor aims to have autonomous driving tech on market in 2020

Auto News - Car makers such as Mercedes and General Motors Co  as well as technology giants like Google Inc
and Apple Inc are already developing driverless vehicles which can complete whole journeys without human input.

But some analysts expect self-driving cars will not appear on global markets until the early- or mid-2020s, partly due to regulatory hurdles.

Hyundai Motor, like other automakers, already has autonomous features in premium vehicles like the Genesis, which can be programmed to hit the brakes when a pedestrian steps out.

GM's Cadillac CT6 tests strategy for taking fat out of big cars

Tech News - The CT6, to be unveiled ahead of the April 3-12 New York auto show, is an expensive car aimed more at boosting Cadillac's brand image than sales volume. Among the promised features is a system that will enable partly autonomous highway cruising.

But the CT6 could have a broader impact on GM's future products because of the way it is built. The car is the largest scale application of the company's new approach to using a mix of steel, aluminum and other materials to build vehicles light enough to meet tougher fuel efficiency standards, but big enough for customers who want spacious cars.

GM engineers are studying variations on the CT6's multi-material construction for at least four other future vehicle architectures and other models could be derived from the CT6's "Omega" architecture, Travis Hester, CT6's chief engineer, said in an interview.

Automakers are under pressure in the United States and China to dramatically increase fuel efficiency over the next decade to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. But as oil prices tumble,
consumers in the world's two richest auto markets are paying premiums for luxury sedans and sport utility vehicles, not small cars.

Although, the company previously hinted that over 1 lakh prospective buyers enrolled to participate in the first ever flash sale for the new Honor handset. Huawei has also kick-started the registrations for the next flash scheduled for April 6,  the registrations will continue till April 5.

Tata Motors bets on new sedan Zest to revive weak India sales

The car, called Zest, is a compact sedan built on a new platform and, in a departure from previous models, boasts user-friendly features such as touch-screen control panels.

Tata Motors' domestic business has posted losses in four of the last eight quarters and Ranjit Yadav, head of passenger vehicles, said the Zest was key to the automaker's revamped domestic strategy.

"The Zest is the first step and an important proof point of what we want to do with our passenger vehicle business," Yadav told Reuters. "We have taken some hard calls in the last 12 to 18 months to set right our fundamentals."

Tata Motors, India's biggest automaker by revenue, dominates the trucks and buses segment, but its passenger cars have failed to lure customers away from local rival Maruti Suzuki India Ltd and foreign competitors including Hyundai Motor Co and Honda Motor Co.

Tata's domestic car sales fell 39 per cent year-on-year in the year that ended on March 31 and its market share also dropped to 4.2 per cent at end-June from 10.2 per cent two years ago, industry data showed.

Lack of a product pipeline, an image that its cars are not cool because they are used as taxis and the legacy of its ultra-cheap Nano, perceived as a poor man's car, has put Tata Motors out of favour with buyers.

In the past, the automaker has relied on its trucks and buses, as well as on the strong sales at its luxury unit Jaguar Land Rover, to offset the weak performance at home.

But with trucks and buses sales declining as India's economy battles the longest spell of below 5 per cent growth in quarter of a century, Tata Motors has now shifted its focus to cars.

It also wants to capitalise on any improvement in the economy under the new government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, executives say. Car sales in India, expected to be the world's third-largest car market by 2018, are likely to rise this year after posting a decline for two consecutive years.

Investors, however, say it won't be easy for Tata Motors to convince buyers of the merits of its passenger cars after being largely absent from that market for so long.

"It will be more of a challenge for Tata because it is in very different segments," said Walter Rossini, a Milan-based portfolio manager for Gestielle India, which manages Indian stocks including Tata Motors shares. "For them it would help to focus more on their commercial vehicle business in India and luxury international business."

Some analysts said Tata has taken a well-calculated risk by launching a compact sedan because of the popularity of smaller, fuel-efficient vehicles. Deepesh Rathore, analyst at Emerging Markets Automotive Advisors, however, said the company still had to change its image, adding: "It will not happen in a hurry."

As part of its new strategy, Tata Motors plans to launch two new vehicles every year until 2020. The Zest will be followed by the Bolt hatchback later this year, said Yadav.
