Shiv Sena takes up Bombay HC renaming issue with Centre

The saffron party wants the name Bombay dropped and replaced it with Mumbai.Sena MP Arvind Sawant on Tuesday said he has spoken to Union Law Minister Sadananda Gowda regarding the renaming issue.

"Since the city is now known as Mumbai, we cannot continue to relate the government institutions with the old name," Sawant said, adding, "I will myself demand that all the government institutions like IIT-Bombay should also be addressed with Mumbai in it."

According to the Sena leader, Mumbai derived its name from Goddess Mumbadevi. "However, the name Bombay was coined by the British rulers as they could not pronounce Mumbai," he added.

The Sena's move has drawn flak from opposition Congress, as it said that the ruling party was deviating from development issues.

"They have lost all focus. Before joining the government, they portrayed themselves as the messiah of farmers and wanted the BJP to stop their suicides and provide them with adequate compensation," Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil said.

Section 66 A of IT Act: Most parties welcome SC decision; JD(U), Sena disagree

JD(U) leader  Sharad Yadav disagreed saying that though he respects judiciary, it was wrong to strike down the "good" provision as freedom of speech does not mean "freedom to abuse" while Shiv Sena felt it would weaken the hands of law enforcement agencies.

The Left parties and Aam Aadmi Party accused both BJP and Congress of taking the "same anti-democratic position" on the issue in the court.

Former Union Minister P Chidambaram, who was part of the UPA government that introduced the controversial provision in 2008, welcomed the Supreme Court judgement holding Section 66A of the IT Act as unconstitutional, saying it was poorly drafted and misused.

PMO asks Shiv Sena for two names to be included in Modi government

"We have got a call from the Prime Minister's office requesting us to recommend two names that we feel should be included in Modiji's cabinet. Though we have several names, Uddhavji will send his recommendation by tomorrow morning," a Sena MP said, requesting anonymity.

The offer of ministerial berths to Sena at the Centre, coming as it does after Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis made it clear that no Shiv Sena minister will be inducted into his ministry before it wins trust vote on November 12, is being seen as an attempt by BJP to humour the former ally into backing the government during the floor test.

While BJP had insisted on Sena first helping it sail through the trust vote, the latter wanted at least some of its ministers included in the Fadnavis government before November
12.

Though both sides have claimed power-sharing talks were in progress, they have not yet been able to sort out the differences over Sena's demand for deputy chief ministership and 2:1 share of ministries.

Heavy Industries Minister Anant Geete is the lone Shiv Sena Minister in the Union Cabinet and the party has often complained about having been neglected by BJP at the Centre.

The Sena MP said though Uddhav would send the names of MPs to be included in the Union government tomorrow, it should not be "misconstrued" as indication of it being prepared to relent on its demands in Maharashtra.

"Please do not equate the demands made by our party to the Central and the state governments. Our demands are different on different levels. We are firm on our demands as far as the state is concerned," he said.
