Best battery backup smartphones for every budget

Tech News - Under Rs 5,000
The Nokia Asha 502 is probably the best phone you'll get under Rs 5,000 and its 1010mAh battery keeps going for really long. It isn't taxed by high-end components; it has only a 3-inch 240x320 display and just 64MB of RAM, but its design is good and if you're looking for a basic device then this is not a bad option.

Under Rs 10,000

There are more options in this price bracket, but in the end, we'd recommend the Lava Iris Fuel 60 ,which you can get for just under Rs 9,000. This 5-inch phone has a large 4,000mAh battery that keeps it running for a long time. The 720x1280 display, powered by a 1.3GHz processor alongside 1GB RAM.

Under Rs. 15,000

Nokia Lumia 730 Dual SIM with good design, display and camera along with excellent battery life make this the right choice if you're not set on getting an Android phone. The phone went on for 12 hours and 44 minutes in our video loop test, which is excellent.

Under Rs 20,000

Between Rs 15,000 and Rs 20,000, the best phone to go with if you need a long battery life is the Sony Xperia C3 Dual  this 5.5-inch phone has a 720p display, a 1.2GHz processor and 1GB of RAM. There's nothing that really stands out, but it consistently delivers a good experience, and the 2,500mAh battery keeps it going for nearly 14 hours when looping video.

Under Rs 30,000

Over Rs 20,000, you see more phones that have great batteries without too many compromises.  Sony Xperia Z1 Compact has solid battery life which  is matched by a sleek design, display and performance.

Over Rs 40,000

Once you cross Rs. 40,000, choices narrow again. We think that the only phone you should seriously consider if battery life is the prime concern, is the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 .  Its gaming performance is a little below what you might expect, it has a fantastic screen, powerful general performance, outstanding battery life, and the S-Pen adds a lot of functionality.

Facebook launches open Internet.org platform amid net neutrality debate in India

Tech News -  However, Reliance Communications remains the only Indian telecom partner as of now on this platform, which has seen entities like Cleartrip and NDTV walking out.

"The platform will be open to all developers who meet certain guidelines, including content that can be browsed on both feature and smartphones and on limited bandwidth," Internet.org Vice President Product Chris Daniels said.

The move comes amid raging debate in the country on Net Neutrality, which stands for equal treatment to be accorded to all Internet traffic.

The principle states that no priority would be given to an entity or company based on payment to service providers like telecom companies, which is seen as discriminatory.

The debate in India has also been triggered by mobile operator Airtel introducing an open marketing platform 'Airtel 0Zero', and TRAI's consultation paper on whether telecom firms can be allowed to charge different rates for different uses of Internet data like email, Internet browsing and use of apps like Whatsapp, Viber and Sky.

In India, Internet.org had partnered with Reliance Communications in February this year to provide free Internet access to 33 websites as part of its Internet.org initiative raised eyebrows, with free Internet supporters saying that it violates the idea of Net Neutrality.

Sushma Swaraj to visit UAE next week

Sushma Swaraj will also interact with the Indian community during her visit, which is taking place at the invitation of her UAE counterpart, Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

India enjoys close and multifaceted comprehensive partnership with UAE. The well-balanced bilateral trade amounted to USD 59 billion in 2013-14. UAE was our largest trading partner in 2012-13.

It is the 11th largest in terms of foreign direct investment in India. It contributes significantly to India's energy security and is the sixth largest supplier of crude oil to India, said an official release.

About 2.6 million strong and vibrant Indian community forms the largest expatriate group in the UAE. Their positive and well-appreciated contribution in the development of their host country has been an important anchor of our excellent bilateral engagement.

India has vital stakes in the security and stability of the Gulf region, which hosts over seven million Indians. This region is also the source of nearly two-third of India's crude oil requirements and is our largest trading partner, it said.

Congress, BJP slam Nitesh's anti-Gujarati rant

"Nitesh Rane's tweet is his personal statement. As far as Congress is concerned, our party never endorses such irresponsible statements and ideology," said Gujarat unit party spokesperson Manish Doshi.

"Congress is always against dividing people in the name of language and territory. Any citizen of India can live and earn his livelihood anywhere in India," Doshi said.

Gujarat BJP General Secretary I K Jadeja registered a strong protest against the "anti-Gujarati" rant by Nitesh, son of senior Congress leader Narayan Rane, terming them as "cheap mentality".

"Narayan Rane's son has revealed his cheap mindset. Just like people from other states gave their contribution in the development Gujarat, Gujarati community gave their contribution in the development of Maharashtra. Thus, to have such mindset against Gujarati community is highly condemnable" Jadeja told reporters.

Nitesh, a first-term MLA, kicked off a storm saying that he wants to begin Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Clean India' campaign from Mumbai by cleaning the city of all Gujaratis who hate Marathis.

"Wanna take part in Swacha Bharat abhiyan n start from mumbai!! Wanna start cleaning up all the Marathi hating gujjus from there once for all," Nitesh posted on Twitter.

Change of regimes in Rajasthan, Haryana forces Robert Vadra to sell his companies

The four companies which were sold by Vadra are Lifline Agrotech Private Limited, Righline Agriculture Private Limited, Greenwave Agro Private Limited and Prime Time Agro Private Limited.

According to reports, Vadra may close his two other companies--Future Infra Agro Limited and Best Seasons Private Limited-- soon. All the closed companies were active in two states--Rajasthan and Haryana-- under Congress rule.  Vadra was the Managing Director of all the companies which were involved in the business of agriculture-based products.

In Rajasthan, BJP under the leadership of Vasundhara Raje has ousted Ashok Gehlot government in May this year while in Haryana the saffron party has formed the government recently for the first time by replacing Bhupinder Singh Hooda-led Congress government.

Vadra has opened 12 companies for business in real sector in Rajasthan and Haryana in 2012. In Haryana the government has initiated enquiry against deal finalised by Vadra's companies in the state.

Vadra is reported to have started selling his companies soon after the swearing-in of Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister of the country. Besides companies, Vadra, the husband of Priyanka Gandhi, has also started selling his lands in Haryana.

Jaitley meets Badals, says no question of snapping alliance with SAD

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley met Union Minister Harsimrat Badal and her husband and SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal at their residence and attended a religious function there on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev there.

Jaitley, who shares cordial ties with the Badals, also spent some time with them and told them that there was no question of the two parties being separated.

"I want to make it clear there is no rift between BJP and SAD. We are the oldest allies, we are not only friends but are in relation with each other. Our alliance is not only a political alliance but a social one too," Jaitley told reporters outside Badal's residence.

BJP general secretary J P Nadda also said there was no question of ending ties with SAD and would seek to know from his party leader Ramshankar Katheriya about his remarks.

"There is no question is snapping ties with SAD. We have an emotional bondage. We are old partners and have been working with emotional understanding for many years. There is no question of any misunderstanding between us," Nadda told.

Jaitley said ties with SAD is more relevant especially after the terrorism days in Punjab as it was instrumental in restoring peace and development in the state.

Nadda said he would find out from Katheria as to what he has stated in Chandigarh that had led to doubts about any alliance between the two allies.

The remarks by Jaitley and Nadda came in the backdrop of BJP leader Katheriya's remarks in Chandigarh yesterday that the party has no problem in running the government in alliance with SAD but in case workers and party leaders wish to fight it alone and a favourable scenario develops in the state, the party may have to think like that.

Modi meets former Israeli President, discusses counter-terrorism

Modi lauded the immense contribution of Peres to the world polity and development of India-Israel relations, a Prime Minister's Office (PMO) release said here."The prime minister said that it was a great honour for him to meet Shimon Peres, whose life was a source of inspiration for the entire world," the release said.

Peres said that Israel sees India as its "elder sister" and  termed Modi "a world leader, a true partner confronting global challenges, and a friend of Israel". Peres also said that Modi was leading a "third revolution" following the steps of Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru and leading India and its people to a better future. The prime minister recalled his visit to Israel as Gujarat chief minister, following which he had promoted the use of drip irrigation in the state and also set up an incubation centre to support start-up companies with Israeli collaboration.

"The prime minister reiterated the strong desire of India to further expand and strengthen its relations with Israel both in traditional areas as well as in new areas of cooperation," the PMO release said. Modi said he was impressed by Israel and its achievements and that India values Israel's contribution in developing advanced technologies. Modi said Israel combines innovation, creativity and courage that had brought solutions in various fields to India and to many other countries around the world. Modi also mentioned that the Indian Jews who had emigrated to Israel form a special link between both nations.

Peres congratulated the prime minister on his victory in the elections. He expressed deep appreciation for the ambitious programmes launched by Modi for India's economic and social transformation which, he said, struck the right balance between respect for tradition and use of modern technology. The former Israeli president said India's development and growth will be beneficial to the entire world. He conveyed Israel's readiness to partner with India in its development efforts and in this context called for greater collaboration in the areas of new and higher technologies.

PMO asks Shiv Sena for two names to be included in Modi government

"We have got a call from the Prime Minister's office requesting us to recommend two names that we feel should be included in Modiji's cabinet. Though we have several names, Uddhavji will send his recommendation by tomorrow morning," a Sena MP said, requesting anonymity.

The offer of ministerial berths to Sena at the Centre, coming as it does after Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis made it clear that no Shiv Sena minister will be inducted into his ministry before it wins trust vote on November 12, is being seen as an attempt by BJP to humour the former ally into backing the government during the floor test.

While BJP had insisted on Sena first helping it sail through the trust vote, the latter wanted at least some of its ministers included in the Fadnavis government before November
12.

Though both sides have claimed power-sharing talks were in progress, they have not yet been able to sort out the differences over Sena's demand for deputy chief ministership and 2:1 share of ministries.

Heavy Industries Minister Anant Geete is the lone Shiv Sena Minister in the Union Cabinet and the party has often complained about having been neglected by BJP at the Centre.

The Sena MP said though Uddhav would send the names of MPs to be included in the Union government tomorrow, it should not be "misconstrued" as indication of it being prepared to relent on its demands in Maharashtra.

"Please do not equate the demands made by our party to the Central and the state governments. Our demands are different on different levels. We are firm on our demands as far as the state is concerned," he said.

Xiaomi hits back over Apple's 'theft' accusation

Responding to Apple's design head Jony Ive's accusation that Xiaomi has stolen iPhone technology, President Lin Bin said Ive should use a Xiamomi phone to know the difference between the two gadgets.

"Xiaomi is a very open company, which would never force anyone to use its products. However, one can only judge Xiaomi's gadgets after he or she has used them," Lin was quoted as saying.

"I'm very willing to give a Xiaomi cell phone to him [Jony Ive] as present, and I look forward to hearing his remarks after he uses it," Lin said.

While responding to a question in San Francisco on Thursday about common features between the two phones, Ive said, "I don't see it as flattery. I see it as theft, and it's lazy. I don't think it's ok at all".

Xiaomi surpassed Samsung and Apple to become the biggest smartphone maker in China in the second quarter of this year, according to a report from Canalys.

Lin said the biggest challenge for Xiaomi currently was to increase its productivity.

In the first half of the year, Xiaomi produced 26 million cell phones and is expected to cross a total of over 60 million this year.

"At present, we can produce 6 to 7 million cell phones each month, and we will continuously improve that," Lin said.

Lei Jun, Xiaomi's founder, said yesterday that Xiaomi would not go public in the next five years.

Type with one hand with new app on iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus

Aptly called One Handed Keyboard, the app displays what it claims to be the same size of keyboard iPhone users are accustomed to.

The keyboard offers only a smaller keyboard that docks to either side of the screen, with extra controls to adjust the theme or colour of the keys, CNET reported.

What the app does not provide is an auto-correct library. So whenever you type something incorrect, the iOS devices cannot correct it.

According to its developers, this feature will be added soon to the app. Users can activate the keyboard in the settings, media reports said.

India can be a tough market for Google's Android One: IDC

Last month, Google launched Android One range of devices in partnership with Indian handset makers Micromax, Karbonn and Spice and mobile operators like Airtel and Reliance. The smart phones are priced Rs 6,399 onwards.

"Despite significant marketing spend already in evidence on Android One, IDC believes India will be a tough crucible for Google. Blocked out of China, Google has no choice but to make a large downstream investment in the Next Billion consumer segment in India," the research firm said.

India is the first country where the California-based firm's Android One devices have been launched. Roll out across other markets like Indonesia, Philippines, Pakistan,Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri-Lanka will follow in coming months.

Success in this segment will greatly enhance their ability to leverage Android to drive adoption by the Next Billion of the Google consumer cloud, it added.    "IDC believes that Android One is crucial for Google to execute on its strategy to leverage the fast-growing Android user base to drive engagement for its increasing portfolio of essential Google services, including search, Maps, Google Now and others," it said.

A consistent user experience, or at least a vastly improved one, will greatly increase engagement and ultimately revenues, IDC added.

The research firm said it expects Android One will attract significant sales and redefine the affordable smart phone segment by reshaping the mid tier with a range of devices that
feature good enough device specifications for a fraction of the price compared to flagship devices.

It added that Android One will go further and effectively create a bipolar pear shaped environment where the high end will be dominated by the likes of Apple and Samsung with their iPhone and Galaxy flagship devices and the low end will increasingly converge around USD 100 Average Selling Price (ASP) benchmark.

Flipkart already has 300,000 registrations for tomorrow's sale. The deadline to register in order to grab a Redmi is Monday midnight.

However the company made assurances in September that October would see much larger quantities of its smartphones coming to India owing to consumers who had been trying multiple times without success and also in line with the Diwali festive season which seen increased spending and purchases from consumers.

Earlier this week, the Chinese OEM put up a total of 1,50,000 phones of Xiaomi Redmi 1S on Flipkart.

The Mi 3 smartphone has been permanently discontinued in India. The final sale took place earlier this week where 25,000 units were put up for sale.

Pakistani film industry is on a revival course: Fawad Khan

The actor forayed into movies at a time when Pakistan's film industry was in absolute doldrums.

"When I did 'Khuda Kay Liye', it was one of the few films being made in the country. The fact that it went on to earn itself so much recognition across the world was totally unforeseen,” said the actor.

“It is only now that the Pakistani film industry is on a revival course. There is some quality work happening and I am glad to be part of it," he added.

It was the much evolved television industry in Pakistan, which helped him make up his mind about acting career.

"I got some wonderful opportunities on television and they helped me discover the actor within me. It was because I did television that I knew I wanted to be an actor. Even Shoaib Mansoor with whom I made my movie debut in 'Khuda Kay Liye' has his roots in television. And it shows in his writing," said Fawad.
The star of hit TV shows like ‘Zindagi Gulzar Hai’ makes his Bollywood debut alongside the very spirited Sonam Kapoor in ‘Khoobsurat’, coming out on Friday.

And he looks forward to a career in Bollywood, but admits he is new to the entire concept of promoting a film.

"In Pakistan promoting films is yet to become a trend. I would shoot a film and be done with it. It's only now after doing 'Khoobsurat' in India that I realize how important the promotion of a film is. And I'm trying to get a grip on the whole process. Film promotion is an entirely new science for me," he said.
So is he planning to balance out a career in Pakistan and India?

"I was never much of a planner. So, I really can't say what the future holds for me. Yes, I do hope to do other Bollywood films after 'Khoobsurat'," said Fawad who has been a singer and actor for about 14 years.
"Yes! It has been that long. I was just a youngster in college trying to escape the drudgery of studies when I drifted into music and acting. At that time I wasn't sure I was interested in acting. I was only sure that I was disinterested in studies,” he added.

Apple: Record four million orders of iPhones on 1st day

hones will still be available Friday on a walk-in basis at Apple retail stores and from various wireless carriers and authorised Apple resellers.

Apple's website had intermittent outages last Friday because of heavy traffic as orders began online. The company said the 4 million orders set a new 24-hour record.

It did not immediately say what the old record was. Last year, Apple sold 9 million phones in the first three days they were on sale.

The new phones were announced last week and have larger screens, faster performance and a wireless chip for making credit card payments at retail stores by holding the phone near the payment terminal. The phones start at USD199 with a two-year service contact.

The phones will initially be available in US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK Availability will expand to more than 20 additional countries a week later.

A free update to Apple's iOS software for phones will be available to existing users on Wednesday. The new phones will come with that update, iOS 8.
Apple's stock rose 30 cents to USD 101.96 in midday trading on Tuesday.

India's smartphone wars: Google's Android One threatens pricing pressure for Samsung

Micromax Infomatics Ltd, Karbonn Mobiles and Spice Group are the first phone manufacturers to sign up for Google's Android One initiative, which provides specifications for key hardware parts. Some of the new phones are due to hit the market this month.

The aim is a vast improvement in quality that would lead to a surge in demand for low-end Android phones. Currently many cheap emerging market smartphones run different and somewhat customised versions of the Android operating system, which along with the many variations in hardware make apps on those phones prone to glitches.

While Google plans to push Android One globally, India, the world's third-biggest and fastest growing smartphone market, offers fertile ground for immediate results. Many Indians are buying a smartphone for the first time and a strong reception for Android One could promote common standards and consolidation in a market where more than 80 smartphone companies operate.

But any boom for higher-quality low-cost smartphones in India and other price conscious markets has the potential to exert intense pricing pressure on Samsung. The South Korean firm uses a customised version of the Android operating system but focuses on higher-margin offerings like its Galaxy S series.

"A major threat for Samsung is that Android One will accelerate the race to the bottom on smartphone pricing," said Neil Mawston, a UK-based analyst at Strategy Analytics.

Android One now makes Google a foe, not just a friend, for Samsung," Mawston said.

A major strategy rethink for low to mid-tier products is now in order for the world's biggest phone maker and top seller in India, analysts say, particularly as Samsung is also losing share to Apple Inc at the higher-end.

GAINS FOR GOOGLE

For Google, a strong uptake of Android One smartphones should increase access to the Internet and Google's suite of products.

Analysts and industry sources also note the potential for Google to expand revenue in ways more favorable to itself than in the past, as Android One phones won't come with the heavy customisation that Samsung and other phone makers using the Android operating system provide.

That will mean more default settings for Google products and less competition from rival search engines and other app stores.

For the Indian phone manufacturers, they are banking on  Android One to be the weapon that helps them grab further share  as well as providing a launch pad for more exports.

Karbonn hopes the programme will expand its overseas revenue to near 20 percent in the next two years, from 5-7 percent now. It is looking to export to markets such as Europe, South Africa and Russia, Chairman Sudhir Hasija said.

Samsung still leads India's smartphone market - a segment expected to propel the country's annual cellphone shipment revenues to as much as $20 billion by 2017, up from more than $14 billion this year, according to Counterpoint Research.

But its grip is looking shakier. Its second-quarter smartphone market share tumbled to 25.3 percent from 33.3 percent in the first quarter, while No. 2 maker Micromax jumped to 19.1 percent from 16.7 percent. Karbonn has 5.9 percent.

How much immediate pressure Samsung will come under will depend on prices.

Announcing Android One phones in June, Google touted pricing under $100 (6,000 rupees) but local media, citing industry sources, have said that may be too ambitious and the phones could be priced between 7,000 and 10,000 rupees.

Karbonn, Micromax and Google declined to comment on the reports. Spice did not respond to a request for comment.

While Samsung does sell cheaply priced phones in India, its marketing is focused on high-end products around 40,000 rupees. One of its most popular models sells for about 20,500 rupees. Samsung declined to provide its average selling price for smartphones in India.

Competition is coming not only from local players using Android One. Mozilla announced this month a low-cost smartphone in India based on its Firefox operating system and priced at just $33.

How Samsung responds to Android One in India is set to have big ramifications for other markets.

In China too, for example, Samsung has rapidly lost share, falling to rank No. 2 in the second quarter behind Xiaomi Inc, a firm which did not even place in the top five in the same period a year ago.

One key factor for Samsung to consider is whether it could and should adopt Android One for its cheaper phones.

"Samsung needs to figure out whether it's going to stay in (the) market at the lower end and come lower or whether it's going to maybe focus on higher level segments," said Rachel Lashford, a Singapore-based analyst at tech research firm Canalys.

Samsung declined to comment on its strategy in India and other emerging markets. It said in a July earnings call it plans to revamp its mid-to-low-tier line-up with more aggressive  pricing and a focus on a smaller set of products.

Xiaomi plans to launch Mi 4 smartphone by year end in India

Xiaomi plans to launch Mi 4
"The next few things that we will be launching are Mi 4, our flagship product; Mi pad, which is a tablet and Mi Band, a health band. Mi 4 will come to India towards the end of the year, post-Diwali in all likelihood," Manu Kumar Jain, Xiaomi's India head of operations, said in an interview.

The company's second product, Redmi 1S, was launched on Tuesday, with registrations continuing till September 2. Redmi 1S will retail in India at Rs.5,999.

The company has entered into exclusive partnership with e-commerce site Flipkart to sell all its products.

"Redmi Note, which is the elder brother of Redmi 1S, with a 5.5 inch panel, will hit the market around three-four weeks from now," said Jain, the co-founder of e-commerce portal Jabong and who earlier worked with McKinsey & Company.

The company launched its first product, Mi3 on July 22 "and we have sold around 95,000 units till now," Jain said.

The company opens flash sell once a week for the phone, which costs Rs.13,999. Xiaomi has also set up 35 service centres across India, including two exclusive Mi service centres in Delhi and Bangalore, to ensure after-sale services for its customers.

"We want to expand service centres to six. They will be in Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai and Gurgaon,” Jain said.

Saying that Xiaomi does not believe in number targets, Jain said the focus was on the right inputs: "The best service centres, the best products and ensuring that products do not have issues. We ensure the software is great and customised for Indian customers and the pricing is right. If the inputs are right, output will follow, which is the number of phones that we are selling."

As for the experience zone in India, Jain said: "We plan to have a Mi Home in Bangalore within four to six months."

"Mi Homes are there in China. The experience zones have a huge area. We convert it into a Mi store. Products are displayed with a huge amount of accessories and this also acts as a service centre. A small lounge or cafeteria is attached where people can enjoy themselves," Jain explained.

Talking about alternative channels of sales, Jain said: "We might start selling through our own website mi.com. We will continue to sell through Flipkart. No timeline has been set so far. Setting up e-commerce operations from scratch takes time in India. In many countries, like in Singapore, we sell through mi.com."

The Indian site is so far used for marketing alone and no purchases can be made from there. As for target customers, Jain said: "Our target audience is the youth and the tech savvy. We believe that this population will grow, will be the dominant and people will buy online. Our products are comparable to any other Rs.30,000-40,000 device available in the market."
