According to sources, the first lot of shipment will meet the demand till the weekend with record pre-booking demand in excess of 21,000 units.

"The fear of shortage in inventory is much less now since there will be sufficient inventory to last till the weekend and Apple has fresh stocks that will hit the shelves by early next week," said one of the trade partners.

Xiaomi hits back over Apple's 'theft' accusation

Responding to Apple's design head Jony Ive's accusation that Xiaomi has stolen iPhone technology, President Lin Bin said Ive should use a Xiamomi phone to know the difference between the two gadgets.

"Xiaomi is a very open company, which would never force anyone to use its products. However, one can only judge Xiaomi's gadgets after he or she has used them," Lin was quoted as saying.

"I'm very willing to give a Xiaomi cell phone to him [Jony Ive] as present, and I look forward to hearing his remarks after he uses it," Lin said.

While responding to a question in San Francisco on Thursday about common features between the two phones, Ive said, "I don't see it as flattery. I see it as theft, and it's lazy. I don't think it's ok at all".

Xiaomi surpassed Samsung and Apple to become the biggest smartphone maker in China in the second quarter of this year, according to a report from Canalys.

Lin said the biggest challenge for Xiaomi currently was to increase its productivity.

In the first half of the year, Xiaomi produced 26 million cell phones and is expected to cross a total of over 60 million this year.

"At present, we can produce 6 to 7 million cell phones each month, and we will continuously improve that," Lin said.

Lei Jun, Xiaomi's founder, said yesterday that Xiaomi would not go public in the next five years.

Type with one hand with new app on iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus

Aptly called One Handed Keyboard, the app displays what it claims to be the same size of keyboard iPhone users are accustomed to.

The keyboard offers only a smaller keyboard that docks to either side of the screen, with extra controls to adjust the theme or colour of the keys, CNET reported.

What the app does not provide is an auto-correct library. So whenever you type something incorrect, the iOS devices cannot correct it.

According to its developers, this feature will be added soon to the app. Users can activate the keyboard in the settings, media reports said.

India can be a tough market for Google's Android One: IDC

Last month, Google launched Android One range of devices in partnership with Indian handset makers Micromax, Karbonn and Spice and mobile operators like Airtel and Reliance. The smart phones are priced Rs 6,399 onwards.

"Despite significant marketing spend already in evidence on Android One, IDC believes India will be a tough crucible for Google. Blocked out of China, Google has no choice but to make a large downstream investment in the Next Billion consumer segment in India," the research firm said.

India is the first country where the California-based firm's Android One devices have been launched. Roll out across other markets like Indonesia, Philippines, Pakistan,Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri-Lanka will follow in coming months.

Success in this segment will greatly enhance their ability to leverage Android to drive adoption by the Next Billion of the Google consumer cloud, it added.    "IDC believes that Android One is crucial for Google to execute on its strategy to leverage the fast-growing Android user base to drive engagement for its increasing portfolio of essential Google services, including search, Maps, Google Now and others," it said.

A consistent user experience, or at least a vastly improved one, will greatly increase engagement and ultimately revenues, IDC added.

The research firm said it expects Android One will attract significant sales and redefine the affordable smart phone segment by reshaping the mid tier with a range of devices that
feature good enough device specifications for a fraction of the price compared to flagship devices.

It added that Android One will go further and effectively create a bipolar pear shaped environment where the high end will be dominated by the likes of Apple and Samsung with their iPhone and Galaxy flagship devices and the low end will increasingly converge around USD 100 Average Selling Price (ASP) benchmark.

1,00,000 Redmi 1S for sale on Flipkart tomorrow

Flipkart already has 300,000 registrations for tomorrow's sale. The deadline to register in order to grab a Redmi is Monday midnight.

However the company made assurances in September that October would see much larger quantities of its smartphones coming to India owing to consumers who had been trying multiple times without success and also in line with the Diwali festive season which seen increased spending and purchases from consumers.

Earlier this week, the Chinese OEM put up a total of 1,50,000 phones of Xiaomi Redmi 1S on Flipkart.

The Mi 3 smartphone has been permanently discontinued in India. The final sale took place earlier this week where 25,000 units were put up for sale.

However the Mi 4 flagship is likely to launch in India by the end of November or in December, while the Redmi Note phablet should make its debut any day now.

Sony Xperia Z2 review

The rear-facing camera of this new smartphone not only features a 20.7MP sensor but also introduces 4K video recording for the first time with a resolution of 3840x2160 pixels, four times that of HD! It is perhaps the most impressive feature of Xperia Z2.

The device is also powered by a quad-core 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor with 3GB of RAM, meaning it is quite the powerhouse. The chip is just as impressive in the real world as it is on paper. The device is very nippy; with no lag whatsoever, even when playing and recording 4K video.

The Xperia Z2 is lighter than its predecessor Xperia Z1 which weighs 169g. Although, Sony hasn't disclosed the exact weight of the Z2 but from holding the device and analyzing it, it is quite clear that Sony has managed to squeeze in a good number of updates, such as a bigger screen, while reducing the weight.

Tatas' Land Rover only Indian-owned brand in world's top 100

Land Rover, an iconic British car brand owned by Indian conglomerate Tatas, has been ranked 91st with a brand value of USD 4.47 billion and is one of the five new entrants on this annual list compiled by leading brand consultancy Interbrand.

Apple — maker of iPhone mobiles, Mac computers, iPad tablets and iPod music players among others — is followed by Google on the second position (USD 107 billion). These are the only two with brand values in excess of USD 100 billion.

While Land Rover is the only Indian-owned entity on the list, there are at least six other brands ranked among top 100 that are part of the entities run by Indian-origin CEOs.

These include Satya Nadella-led Microsoft (5th with brand value of USD 61 billion), Indra Nooyi-led Pepsi (24th; USD 19 billion), Shantanu Narayen-led Adobe (77th; USD 5.3 billion) and Ajay Banga-led MasterCard (88th; USD 4.7 billion).

Ivan Menezes-led British drinks giant Diageo, which also owns majority stake in India’s largest alcoholic beverage manufacturer United Spirits, also has two portfolio brands — Smirnoff (34th; USD 13 billion) and Johnnie Walker (86th; USD 4.8 billion) — on the top 100 list.

Land Rover has been ranked higher than many big global brands like FedEx, Huawei, Heineken, Pizza Hut, BOSS, Nokia, Gap and Nintendo.

“Exemplifying British engineering and expertise in the SUV category, the iconic British brand (owned by TATA of India) has invested heavily in product creation, facility, and infrastructure,” Interbrand said.

The leading brand consultancy further noted that “with 115 awards across its car range (led by Range Rover with 55 awards), Land Rover is finally getting the recognition it deserves and has improved its J D Power scores significantly.”

“With the customer at the heart of the company, a clear focus and significant investment in improving design and quality, and demonstrating world-class technology and innovation, Land Rover is fully equipped to experience accelerating success in the forthcoming Age of You,” Interbrand added.

Among top-ten, Apple and Google are followed by Coca-Cola, IBM, Microsoft, GE, Samsung, Toyota, McDonald’s and Mercedes Benz.

Apple’s brand value increased 21 per cent year-on-year, while for Google it was 15 per cent and for Coca Cola it was 3 per cent.

To be included in Best Global Brands, a brand must be truly global, having successfully transcended geographic and cultural boundaries, Interbrand said.

It must have a significant presence in Asia, Europe, and North America, as well as broad geographic coverage in emerging markets.

Moreover, the brand must have a public profile and awareness across the world’s major economies.

Election Commission will decide on Assembly polls in flood-hit J&K: Rajnath Singh

"We should not connect the natural disaster and tragedy with either elections or politics. The Election Commission will take a decision and they are the ultimate decision makers in that regard," Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said when asked if the flood disaster would have any bearing on the forthcoming polls.

The state is slated to go to polls later this year.

"I cannot comment anything as of now and the situation has to be assessed and only after that a final decision can be taken. The Election Commission will decide on this subject," he said.

On the state of security forces and their infrastructure in the state in the wake of the floods, Singh said no border post of the Army, BSF or other forces has been washed away due to the floods.

"There is no such information like that received from there. Every Army personnel in the border is safe. In fact, our Army and paramilitary forces are trying to save people and I compliment the Army, paramilitary forces and the NDRF for the exceptional work they are doing," he said.

SBI seeks RBI's permission to launch contact-less debit cards

The bank has sought Reserve Bank's permission for this.

"Right now, for any card which has to be used, a customer has to put in the pin number. Some exception has to be made as for lower amount deals like buying a Metro or bus ticket, where he can simply show the card and get in.

"So, we have requested the RBI to come up with a limit below which the pin will be waived. We have suggested that we can have up to Rs 2,000 as the limit," SBI Deputy MD (corporate strategy and new businesses) S K Mishra told reporters here while launching a multi-currency foreign travel card.
Once the regulation comes in, all its future debit cards would be near-field communication (NFC or contact-less) enabled, he added.

The bank is currently doing a test-run of such contact- less cards at the Chennai and Mumbai metro stations.
SBI and MasterCard launched a multi-currency foreign travel card which would be available in dollar, pound, euro and the Singaporean dollar.

A customer will have to pay one-time fee of Rs 100 to get the card and the minimum amount that can be loaded is USD 200.

"The country you are in would be the base currency for the first transaction, but if there is no balance in that account then it can switch over to the other buckets which hold the available balance," Mishra said.
SBI has currently authorised 100 branches across Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Bangalore to sell the card. Mishra said the bank would later add other currencies such as Canadian dollar, Australian dollar, Japanese Yen and Saudi Riyal to this multi-currency card. The bank also proposes to make these cards contact-less in a month or so.

Lizard tails may help humans get new limbs

Now, scientists have solved the mystery of how lizards can regenerate their tails.

They discovered the genetic ‘recipe’ for lizard tail regeneration, which may come down to using genetic ingredients in just the right mixture and amounts.

By following the genetic recipe for regeneration that is found in lizards, and then harnessing those same genes in human cells, it may be possible to regrow new cartilage, muscle or even spinal cord in the future.

"Lizards basically share the same toolbox of genes as humans. They are the most closely-related animals to humans that can regenerate entire appendages," said Kenro Kusumi from Arizona State University.Researchers discovered that lizards turn on at least 326 genes in specific regions of the regenerating tail, including genes involved in embryonic development, response to hormonal signals and wound healing.

"Using next-generation technologies to sequence all the genes expressed during regeneration, we have unlocked the mystery of what genes are needed to regrow the lizard tail," explained Kusumi.

The findings may also lead to discoveries of new therapeutic approaches to spinal cord injuries, repairing birth defects, and treating diseases such as arthritis, said the study published in the journal PLOS ONE.

Kerry urges China to be cooperative partner

Kerry, who is in Australia for annual talks on security and foreign policy, made the comments as Beijing accused Washington of deliberately stoking tensions in the South China Sea.

‘We welcome the rise of China as a global partner, hopefully, as a powerful economy, as a full participating constructive member of the international community,’ he said.

‘And we want China to participate in constructive ways, whether it is in the South China Sea, or with respect to Japan, and South Korea, with North Korea, with other issues that we face.’

Beijing claims almost all of the South China Sea, putting it at odds with countries including the Philippines and Vietnam, and there have been several tense encounters in the area over recent months.

China has rejected a US proposal for a freeze on provocative actions in the region, with Foreign Minister Wang Yi saying: ‘Some countries outside the region are restless, and stir up tensions... might their intention be to create chaos in the region? China and ASEAN are totally able to safeguard well the peace and stability of South China Sea, Wang said on Monday.

Kerry said the US was looking to cooperate with China.

‘We are not seeking conflict and confrontation. And our hope is that China will likewise take advantage of the opportunities that are in front of it and be that cooperative partner,’ he said in Sydney.

The US has sharpened its tone on the South China Sea following a series of maritime incidents between China and rival claimants, including Beijing's positioning of one oil rig in waters also claimed by Vietnam. The incident sparked deadly riots in Vietnam.

Kerry said that while there were always differences between countries, there were issues on which all parties could agree a diplomatic path forward.

‘Because everybody in the world understands that the world will be better off if great power nations are finding ways to cooperate and not confront each other,’ he said.

RNA molecule prevents heart failure: Study

The molecule is a non-coding RNA which is named ‘Myheart’ by the researchers. It blocks a protein called BRG1 that interferes in usual genetic activities of the heart when it is in stress.

Scientists during the experiment restored levels of molecules in mice experiencing heart failure thus preventing the succession of the failure.

The scientists had earlier recorded that the protein which is crucial for the development of the heart in the foetus turns into a disruptor at later stages, especially when the heart undergoes stress due to high blood pressure.

The scientists discovered that during such periods of stress, it was noticed that production of Myheart is suppressed, leading to uncontrolled hara-kiri by BRG1.

In the new research, the researchers reported that in mice with stress-induced high levels of BRG1, they were able to restore Myheart to normal levels using gene transfer technology thus preventing heart failure in the process.

Dr Ching-Pin Chang, director of molecular and translational medicine, at the Krannert Institute of Cardiology said “I think of Myheart as a molecular crowbar that pries BRG1 off the genomic DNA and prevents it from manipulating genetic activity."

The team of researchers is trying to identify smaller areas of Myheart involved in the blocking activity as Myheart is too big a molecule to be delivered as a drug to humans.

Omar Abdullah thanked Narendra Modi for power projects in Ladakh region

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the 45 MW Nimoo-Bazgo hydroelectric power project in Leh and later, 44 MW hydro power project at Chutak village in Kargil district.

Addressing a function, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that Ladakh is one of the most beautiful corners in the world but is plagued by a few problems as well.

"This corner is the most beautiful area in the world. But there are problems as well. You will never find dearth of hospitality and smile among the people of this region. There was a cloud burst here in 2010.

"But people braved it and fought that calamity courageously. We can't find a trace of the after effects of cloud burst here now," he said.

The Chief Minister highlighted the problems faced by people while travelling outside the state including high air-fare.

"Airlines should reduce the fares. In peak winters they have shell out up to Rs 22,000 for travelling to Delhi from Leh. We want this to be reduced and better connectivity for the people of this area," Omar said.

The Chief Minister also thanked former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for taking the initiative of early completion of Nimoo Bazgo hydro power project.

"I thank former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for promptly releasing required funds for early completion of the project," he said.

LJP to be part of 'Mahayuti' in Maharashtra: Ram Vilas Paswan

"LJP became part of the Mahayuti after joining the NDA. Number of seats don't matter. We campaigned for Nitin Gadkari in Nagpur and he won by over three lakh votes," Paswan told reporters.

Paswan, Union Food and Civil Supplies Minister, was asked if his Lok Janshakti Party has been formally inducted into the Mahayuti comprising BJP, Shiv Sena, RPI-A of Ramdas Athawale, Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatna of Raju Shetty and Rashtriya Samaj Paksha of Mahadev Jankar.

"We are part of the Mahayuti and even if we don't get any seats to contest our alliance will not break," Paswan said, adding he would discuss the election strategy in Maharashtra with state and central BJP leaders.

The dalit leader from Bihar said his party had contested elections in Maharashtra in the past too.

He ridiculed the recent alliance sewn up by Lalu Prasad and Nitish Kumar in Bihar, saying they had come together as they were not in a position to weather the Narendra Modi wave alone.

"This will not help them in anyway. Parties can join hands, but hearts have to meet. I and Lalu were also in alliance and both lost," he said, adding LJP would remain with the BJP and contest the upcoming Bihar assembly by-elections.

Claiming that both Lalu and Nitish Kumar have lost their base, Paswan said, "Generation next wants development and politics of caste and religion will not work."

When asked to comment on Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi showing unusual aggression in storming the well of the Lok Sabha yesterday, Paswan shot back, "what other option does he have now?"

"People have given the NDA such a huge mandate. There is nothing like a magic wand and Congress should wait for at least one year to see if the government fulfils people's expectations. By entering the Well and making allegations, one cannot influence the people," he said.

IT stocks drag Sensex, Nifty down as markets fall for second day

With over 1.5 percent fall each, heavyweights Infosys and TCS lead the losses in both benchmark indices. Weak global cues also persisted as Asian markets mostly dipped as concerns over the European economy and international conflicts, including in Ukraine, grew, said brokers.

The BSE 30-share barometer resumed stable and later moved erratically in a range of 25,778.05 and 25,526.05 before settling at 25,589.01, a fall of 76.26 points or 0.30 percent. On Wednesday it has plunged 242.74 points or 0.94 percent.

Similarly, the 50-issue CNX Nifty of the NSE also gyrated in a range of 7,708.95 and 7,630.40 before concluding down by 22.80 points or 0.30 percent at 7,649.25. It had slipped by 74.50 points or 0.96 percent in the previous session.

US-headquartered Cognizant, which has a large employee force in India, yesterday lowered its 2014 year revenue guidance to at least 14 per cent from 16.5 percent earlier.

This sparked off worries IT sector may face challenges ahead. Infosys and TCS were the top losers from the Sensex with fall of 1.68 percent and 1.56 percent respectively. The sectoral BSE-IT and BSE-Teck indices were the biggest lowers, dropping by 1.27 per cent and 1.14 per cent respectively.

Banking, realty, power, capital goods, healthcare, metal and FMCG sector stocks also came under selling pressure.

Bucking the overall weak trend, shares of companies related to railways saw buying interest after the government on Wednesday approved FDI liberalisation in the sector.

Shares of some defence equipment makers initially moved up but succumbed to selling. The Cabinet on Wednesday cleared the proposal for raising FDI limit in defence to 49 percent.

Second-line stocks were also on the selling list.

A mixed closing in the other Asian markets and a lower opening of European markets on signs of deepening Ukraine crisis also dampened trading sentiments, brokers said.

Meanwhile, Foreign portfolio Investors bought shares worth Rs 283.87 crore on Wednesday.

Mutual funds' equity folio count rises by 84,000 in Q1 FY15

Folios are numbers designated to individual investor accounts, though one investor can have multiple folios.

According to the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) data on total investor accounts with 44 fund houses, the number of equity folios rose to 2,92,64,713 at the end of
June 2014, from 2,91,80,922 at the end of the last fiscal (March 31, 2014), registering a gain of 83,791 during the three-month period.

The additions came at a time when the market was scaling new highs.

In May, the number of equity mutual fund (MF) folio stood at 2,92,19,875, while it was 2.96 crore at April-end.

Besides, the month of April saw the first rise in more than four years. Prior to that, the equity MF sector had seen a continuous closure of folios since March 2009 after the market crashed due to the global financial crisis in late 2008.

Since March 2009, it has seen a closure of 1.5 crore folios.

The investor base reached at its peak of 4.11 crore in March 2009 while it was 3.77 crore in March 2008.

On the rise in the folios last month, analysts said that robust market performance over the past few months helped investors renew faith in stock market.

Besides, the industry saw a record Rs 7,309 crore net inflows in equity funds in June, which helped the industry grow its folio count.

"The increase in investor base into equity mutual funds is a positive development for the markets. Since markets have been rising, investors seem to have realised that they are missing out on a big opportunity," ICICI Prudential AMC CIO S Naren said.

Axis AMC Senior Fund Manager (Equity) Pankaj Murarka said: "The trend of rise in new accounts in equity mutual fund is expected to accelerate as the increase is too small."

The BSE's benchmark Sensex breached 25,000 mark in June, NSE's Nifty closed at its the then all-time high of 7,600 points during the month.

Remy's failed Liverpool move can't be due to fitness: Redknapp

"I don't see how he could have failed a medical," Redknapp said on Monday.

"He had a stringent one here, one at Marseille and at Newcastle and with France before the World Cup. You couldn't meet a fitter lad. There has to be another reason," he added.

Remy, who scored 14 goals in 26 league appearances for Newcastle last season, will start the new Premier League season at QPR.

"Their loss is our gain - we've got a fantastic striker," Redknapp added.

"I said last year he was capable of scoring 20 goals in the Premier League. That's what we now want him to do for us,” he said.

The 27-year-old joined Liverpool on tour in the United States to complete his 8.5 million pounds (USD 14.44 million) move but the deal fell through on Sunday.

Reds manager Brendan Rodgers told reporters: "It's very simple - we have made a decision as a club not to go ahead with the deal. It's unfortunate for the player. But there's nothing more to be said."

Remy moved to QPR from Marseille in a club-record eight million pounds (USD 13.59 million) deal in January 2013 and joined Newcastle on a season-long loan last August following QPR's relegation to the Championship.
